Yesterday Patrick was sitting on the floor playing with some toys and singing quietly to himself. I couldn't figure out what he was singing, but he sang it over and over again. This is what I heard:"Rambling, rambling, rambling, rambling, make a spider scream".Huh?I listened a bit more and figured out the melody, what he was actually singing was this:"Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream".
This is how the mother of all temper tantrums ended yesterday....

He fell asleep while crying in front of the front door. It was about 6 pm and he was out for the rest of the night! I'm not even sure what triggered the crying, it had something to do with not being able to rescue his friend Calvin from the roof. Calvin was not on the roof, nor in need of rescue but Patrick has been a little obsessed with all things relating to firemen (even insisting that his name is not Patrick, but "Fireman Sam"). So there he was, passed out on the hardwood floor. I moved him to his room and managed to get him changed into pajamas and tuck him in. He woke up enough to protest but went right back to sleep and didn't wake up until this morning. VERY unusual for him to sleep that long. Hopefully things will be back to normal tomorrow. Two has been very tiring lately :(
A little gem Patrick shared with me this afternoon...
"Momma, we don't have any monkeys in this house and that makes me sad. It hurts my feelings".
Another milestone in our house! Patrick is now sleeping in a twin sized bed. This past weekend we picked up his new bedroom furniture at Costco and Patrick was thrilled with the big bed. We didn't have any bedding yet but Patrick was obsessed with the bed and so excited to have it. In fact he was so excited, he had a hard time sleeping in his crib! Tonight we finally picked up a mattress and some flannel sheets and Patrick very happily went right to sleep in his new bed. His new comforter set should arrive tomorrow, and we still need ot get the crib out of his room, but Patrick couldn't be happier. He went down so easily tonight it made me a little sad. My baby is growing up!
This morning Patrick decided that we needed to have a birthday party for Daddy (never mind that his birthday isn't until September). So I asked Patrick what we needed to do for the party. He thought for a second and said "I know! First we need to make a cake!". Sadly we did not have any eggs in the house so we made birthday scones instead. Patrick was very excited to help out in the kitchen, pouring ingredients into the mixing bowl and stirring. When Tom got home tonight Patrick ran up to him and said "Daddy! We made you little cakes!". Isn't that the best?
The terrible 2s seem to have hit full force in the last month or so. When Patrick turned 2 in April I kept thinking "This isn't so bad!". And it really wasn't for the first 6 or 7 month. But someone must have clued him in on the fact that he is supposed to act like an irrational little person. Don't want to get in the car? Scream and arch your back so mommy can't get you in your car seat! Tired of Target? Throw yourself down on the floor and scream so mommy scoops you up and leaves! Don't want to leave the house? Refuse to get dressed! Not getting your way? Punish mommy by slamming furniture into the walls!Sigh. And now the attitude has started. We were getting ready to go to the grocery store today and I asked Patrick to sit down so I could put his shoes on. His response? "No way!" shouted over and over and over again. I hear from friends it only gets worse when they turn 3. Somedays I think I may move to Australia. But then he does something completely adorable like insisting we use the phone to call his baby sister. I tried explaining that it wouldn't work but he insisted it would. I finally called Tom on his call phone so Patrick could "talk" to his sister. He kept asking "Whatcha doin' in there?" to which baby sister responsed "I'm growing!". Patrick has decided he wants to call her every night before bed. How cute is that?
